Spectra479 amber glasses - evening blue light blockers for about $36
The Spectra479 amber glasses are made for one thing: wearing in the evening to cut the blue and blue-green light from screens and room lights. They cost about $36 and have a 4.6-star average from roughly 600 reviews on Amazon.
What you get
Spectra479 says the lenses are tested to block 99.9% or more of light from 280 to 510nm, which covers UV, blue and part of the green range. The company calls 450-510nm the most disruptive band at night. The lenses are bright rather than dark. They aren't polarized and there's no heavy tint, so you can read, watch TV and see people's faces in a dimly lit room.
This listing is the medium adult size. If you have a larger head, Spectra479 points you to its original, bigger frame instead.
Be realistic about the benefit
The evidence that blue light blocking glasses improve sleep is weak and mixed. A 2023 Cochrane review of 17 trials rated the effect on sleep as uncertain and found probably little or no effect on eye strain. One small 2018 trial of people with insomnia found amber lenses worn two hours before bed added about 28 minutes of sleep, while a 2025 meta-analysis of sleep-tracker data found only small, non-significant gains. The American Academy of Ophthalmology doesn't recommend special eyewear for computer use. Our do blue light glasses work piece covers the studies.
So treat these as a cheap experiment. Wear them for about two hours before bed for a week or two. If nothing changes, you have your answer.
Who it's for
- People on screens most evenings who want to try amber lenses properly
- Anyone who wants an evening-specific pair rather than safety glasses
- Medium-sized faces and heads
Who should skip it
Prescription glasses wearers should get the Spectra479 Fit-Over, which uses the same lens spec over your own glasses. If you want daytime eye strain relief, skip blue light glasses altogether and use the 20-20-20 rule. And if the real issue is that you can't stop scrolling before bed, glasses won't fix the habit.
Alternatives
The Uvex Skyper SCT-Orange costs about $17 and is the cheapest way to try orange lenses, though it looks like safety eyewear. For normal-looking acetate frames, the Swanwick Night Swannies cost about $130. All four are compared in our best blue light blocking glasses guide. For the bigger picture, see screen time and sleep.
