Spectra479 Fit-Over amber glasses - blue light blockers over your own glasses
If you wear prescription glasses, most amber blue light blockers are no use unless you pay for custom tinted lenses. The Spectra479 Fit-Over goes on top of the glasses you already have. It costs about $40 and has a 4.5-star average from around 500 reviews on Amazon.
What you get
The lens is the same as the regular Spectra479 amber glasses: tested by the company to block 99.9% or more of light from 280 to 510nm, UV included. The lenses are bright rather than dark and aren't polarized, so you can still read and see faces in a dim room. The frame is sized to sit over prescription and reading glasses, and you can also wear it on its own.
Fit-overs are bulky by design. Very wide or thick frames may not fit underneath, so measure your widest pair before ordering.
Be realistic about the benefit
Evidence that blue light blocking glasses improve sleep is weak and mixed. A 2023 Cochrane review of 17 trials rated the effect on sleep as uncertain and found probably little or no effect on eye strain. A small 2018 insomnia trial found about 28 minutes of extra sleep with amber lenses worn two hours before bed, but a 2025 meta-analysis found only small, non-significant gains. Our do blue light glasses work piece has the details.
Who it's for
- Prescription and reading glasses wearers who want to try amber lenses in the evening
- Anyone who'd rather not pay for custom tinted prescription lenses
Who should skip it
If you don't wear glasses, the standard Spectra479 is smaller and lighter. If you're after daytime eye strain relief, blue light glasses aren't the answer. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends the 20-20-20 rule instead.
Alternatives
The Uvex Skyper SCT-Orange is a cheaper wraparound pair (about $17) that fits over many glasses, though it isn't designed specifically for that. See all four picks in our best blue light blocking glasses guide, and our screen time and sleep explainer for what else affects evening sleep.
