This page explains how our buying guides are put together, so you can judge how much weight to give them.

Research, not lab testing

We don't run a test lab, and our guides don't claim hands-on testing unless an article says so for a specific product. Each guide is researched from:

  • Product specs and listings. What the manufacturer states about size, power, features and what's in the box.
  • Independent data. Where it exists: AHAM-verified clean air delivery rates for air purifiers, published studies and systematic reviews, government guidance (for example NIH, CDC and EPA), and safety recalls from the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
  • Price history. Our own tracking of each product's Amazon price over time.
  • Buyer reviews. What people report after living with a product, especially recurring problems.

How we choose products

We look for products that are actually for sale on Amazon, have a meaningful number of buyer reviews, and fit the need the guide is about. We weigh specs, independent data, price and the pattern of buyer feedback. A product with a mixed rating can still make a list if it's the best fit for a specific need, but we'll say plainly that the rating is mixed.

The "editor rating" on our product cards is our overall judgment from that research. It isn't a lab score, and it isn't the Amazon star rating.

How we handle claims

  • Manufacturer claims are labeled as the manufacturer's claims ("per the listing", "according to the brand").
  • We don't invent numbers. If we can't support a figure, we leave it out.
  • If a product has a real drawback, the guide says so.

Health and safety topics

Some guides touch on health: sleep, snoring, supplements, allergies and asthma. For these:

  • We stick to what the evidence supports and say when evidence is weak or mixed.
  • We rely on primary sources such as the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, the CDC, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and peer-reviewed reviews.
  • We point you to a doctor where that matters, for example before taking iron, or if snoring comes with pauses in breathing.

Our health content is general information, not medical advice. It can't replace advice from a doctor, pharmacist or other qualified professional who knows your situation.

Affiliate links don't decide picks

We earn a commission when you buy through our Amazon links. We don't accept payment from brands, free products in exchange for coverage, or sponsored placements. See our affiliate disclosure.

Updates and corrections

Prices, availability and products change. We review guides and update them when a product is discontinued, a better option appears, or new evidence changes the advice. Each guide shows when it was last updated.

If you find an error, email [email protected] with the page link and what's wrong. We'll check it and correct the page if we got it wrong.
