Uvex Skyper SCT-Orange glasses - the $17 way to try amber lenses

The Uvex Skyper is a pair of safety glasses from Honeywell's Uvex brand. With the SCT-Orange lens it's become a popular budget blue light blocker for evenings. It costs about $17 and has a 4.2-star average from around 7,500 reviews on Amazon.

What you get

Uvex says the SCT-Orange lens (Spectrum Control Technology) absorbs 98% of blue light. The temples adjust for length and have cushioned tips. The lens tilts to three positions, and there's a molded nose bridge. The wraparound shape blocks more light coming in from the sides than flat-front glasses, and many buyers wear them over regular glasses, depending on frame size. The lens can be replaced.

What the listing gets wrong

The listing says the lens helps prevent cataracts and macular degeneration and reduces eye fatigue. The American Academy of Ophthalmology says there's no evidence that light from screens damages your eyes, and a 2023 Cochrane review found blue-light filtering lenses probably make little or no difference to eye strain. Ignore those claims.

For sleep, the evidence is weak and mixed. A small 2018 insomnia trial found amber lenses worn two hours before bed added about 28 minutes of sleep, but a 2025 meta-analysis found only small, non-significant gains. Our do blue light glasses work article goes through the studies.

Who it's for

  • Anyone curious about amber lenses who doesn't want to spend much finding out
  • People who want wraparound coverage
  • Some prescription wearers, if their frames fit underneath

Who should skip it

Anyone who cares how they look on the couch: these are unmistakably safety glasses. People who need a guaranteed fit over prescription frames should look at the Spectra479 Fit-Over, which is designed for it.

Alternatives

The Spectra479 amber glasses, about $36, are built specifically for evening wear with bright lenses. The full comparison is in our best blue light blocking glasses guide. Glasses only address the light. If you want to cut evening screen use altogether, see how to stop scrolling before bed.
