Swanwick Night Swannies - premium amber glasses at about $130
The Swanwick Night Swannies are amber blue light blocking glasses that look like ordinary glasses. They cost about $130 and have a 4.4-star average from around 1,500 reviews on Amazon.
What you get
Swanwick claims the amber lenses block 99% of blue and green light. The lenses are CR-39, the material used in many prescription glasses, with an anti-reflective coating. The frame is cellulose acetate, which Swanwick says is BPA-free and adjustable. This listing is the regular size in black. Swanwick suggests wearing them for one to two hours before bed while using screens or under artificial light.
The price question
On lens specs, the Night Swannies are in the same range as the Spectra479 amber glasses, which cost about $36. The extra money buys frame quality and looks, not a proven extra benefit for sleep. If appearance doesn't matter to you, the cheaper pairs make more sense.
Be realistic about the benefit
Evidence that blue light glasses improve sleep is weak and mixed. A 2023 Cochrane review of 17 trials rated the effect on sleep as uncertain and found probably little or no effect on eye strain. A small 2018 insomnia trial found amber lenses worn for two hours before bed added about 28 minutes of sleep, while a 2025 meta-analysis found only small, non-significant gains. The American Academy of Ophthalmology doesn't recommend special eyewear for computer use. Our do blue light glasses work piece covers this.
Who it's for
- People who want amber glasses they'd be happy to wear in front of guests
- Buyers who care about frame material and lens finish
Who should skip it
Anyone testing whether amber lenses help at all should start with a cheaper pair. Prescription wearers need a fit-over such as the Spectra479 Fit-Over.
