Moso Natural charcoal bag - does it actually work for cooking smells?
Nearly 13,000 Amazon reviews and a 4.4 star average. The Moso Natural is a 200g bamboo charcoal bag you place near an odour source and leave. No power, no fragrance, no maintenance apart from an hour in sunlight once a month to reactivate.
How it actually works
Bamboo charcoal has a porous structure with a large internal surface area. Volatile organic compounds (the molecules that carry cooking smells) get trapped in those pores through adsorption. It's a physical process, not chemical. No fragrance is added, nothing is sprayed. The smell molecules just get stuck.
This matters because it means the bag doesn't mask anything. It removes. The trade-off is speed. Charcoal bags work over hours, not minutes. If you've just fried fish and need the smell gone now, this isn't the fix. An enzymatic spray like Zero Odour handles the immediate problem. The charcoal bag handles the background.
Our charcoal bags vs sprays vs plug-ins comparison explains when to use each.
Where to put it
Near the hob is the obvious spot, but it works better when you scatter a few around. On top of kitchen cabinets where warm air rises, in the hallway if smells drift, at the bottom of the stairs if cooking reaches the first floor. Our guide on stopping cooking smells going upstairs covers placement properly.
What it won't do
Won't save you from a post-curry emergency. Won't clear fish smell on its own, that needs an enzymatic spray first. And there's no indicator to tell you when the charcoal is spent. You just notice it stops working, usually after 12-18 months in a heavy-use kitchen.
Is it worth £10?
For a product that lasts over a year and costs nothing to run, yes. It's the cheapest ongoing odour control option in our best kitchen odour eliminators guide. If you want coverage for the whole house, the Breathe Green 10-pack works out cheaper per bag.
