Breathe Right Original nasal strips, large - the cheap first test for nasal snoring

Breathe Right Original strips are the nasal strip most people try first. The large tan 30-count box costs about $11 on Amazon and has a 4.3-star average from roughly 16,000 ratings. At about 38 cents a night, it's the cheapest way to find out whether your nose is behind your snoring.

How they work

Each strip has flexible, spring-like bands inside. You stick it just above the flare of your nostrils, the bands try to straighten, and that lifts the sides of your nose open. Breathe Right says this improves nasal airflow by up to 31%. The strips are drug-free, so they don't interact with decongestants or allergy medicine.

The 1997 Rhinology study by Ulfberg and Fenton found these strips reduced snoring in habitual snorers. The effect was modest, and other studies have found less. Our best nasal strips for snoring guide goes through the evidence.

Sizing

Breathe Right says small/medium fits most adults and large is for bigger noses. This listing is the large size. If the ends lift off your cheeks or the strip won't lie flat, try small/medium.

Who it's for

  • People whose snoring gets worse with a cold, allergies or a stuffy nose
  • Anyone who isn't sure why they snore and wants a cheap, low-risk first test
  • Side sleepers who've had cheaper strips fall off overnight

Who should skip it

People whose snoring comes from the throat rather than the nose. A strip won't change that, and our nasal strips vs chin straps vs mouth tape comparison helps you work out which type you are. Skip it too if you have sensitive skin on your nose. Peel strips off slowly with warm water either way.

Most important: if someone has seen you stop breathing in your sleep, you wake up gasping, or you're very sleepy during the day, see a doctor about a sleep study. Those are signs of sleep apnea, and nasal strips don't treat it.

Alternatives

If the Original helps but not enough, Breathe Right Extra Strength has bands the brand says are 50% stronger, at about $17 for 44. If adhesive bothers your skin, the Mute nasal dilator works from inside the nostril instead.
