Kolbs bed wedge pillow, 7.5 inch - a bestselling wedge for back sleepers who snore
The Kolbs wedge is one of Amazon's long-running bestsellers in bed wedges. It costs about $44 and averages 4.4 stars from nearly 20,000 ratings. It's sold for snoring, acid reflux and back pain. For snoring, it's aimed at one group: people who snore mostly when they're on their back.
The specs
This is the 7.5-inch version, measuring 24 x 24 x 7.5 inches. There's a 1.5-inch memory foam layer on top of a firmer high-density foam core, and a removable, machine-washable jacquard cover. Kolbs also makes a 12-inch version (25 x 25 x 12 inches). The steeper one suits reading in bed, or people who've been told to raise their upper body more, but many people find it too upright to sleep on.
Why a wedge can help snoring
On your back, gravity pulls the tongue and soft palate toward the back of the throat, and that narrows the airway. Raising your head and upper body on a gentle slope can ease that for positional snorers. A wedge lifts your whole torso, not just your head, so it's harder to slide off than a contoured "anti-snore" pillow. Nothing goes on your face, which makes it the least intrusive option.
Who it's for
- People whose partner says the snoring happens mainly on their back
- Snorers who also get heartburn or reflux at night
- Anyone who has tried strips or tape and can't stand wearing anything
Who should skip it
People who snore just as much on their side. Elevation won't change much for them. Stomach sleepers can't really use a wedge. Some people also find sleeping on an incline odd for the first week or so.
A wedge doesn't treat sleep apnea. If someone has seen you stop breathing in your sleep, or you wake gasping or feel very sleepy during the day, see a doctor about a sleep study. Kolbs markets the wedge for sleep apnea, but it's a positioning aid, not a substitute for diagnosis and treatment.
