3M Micropore paper tape, 1 inch, box of 12 - the budget mouth tape sleep forums recommend
3M Micropore is a medical paper tape that hospitals use to hold dressings in place. It's also the tape people in snoring and sleep forums recommend most for mouth taping, mainly because it's gentle and very cheap. This box has twelve 1-inch x 10-yard rolls for about $12 on Amazon, with 4.6 stars from roughly 7,700 ratings.
What 3M says about it
Gentle on skin, latex-free and hypoallergenic, highly breathable, and it holds on damp skin. It's a general medical tape, not a product made or tested for sleep.
How people use it for snoring
The common method is a short piece, about an inch, placed vertically over the middle of closed lips. The idea is to stop your mouth from falling open, not to seal it, and you can push the tape off with your tongue if you need to. Paper tape can tug at lip skin, so peel it off slowly in the morning. Some people put a little lip balm on the corners of the mouth first, but not under the tape itself.
A box of 12 rolls lasts a very long time. The per-night cost is a few cents.
Read this before mouth taping
The evidence is limited: one small 2022 study in 20 mouth breathers with mild sleep apnea, where snoring intensity roughly halved, and a 2025 systematic review in PLOS ONE that called the evidence weak and warned about risks for people with nasal obstruction.
Don't tape your mouth if you can't breathe easily through your nose, if you have or might have sleep apnea, if you have reflux, asthma or another breathing condition, or after alcohol or sedatives. Never use it on a child. If you snore loudly, gasp or stop breathing in your sleep, or are very tired during the day, see a doctor about a sleep study first.
Who it's for
Healthy adults with a clear nose who want to try mouth taping cheaply, or who already know they tolerate it.
Who should skip it
Anyone covered by the warnings above, and people who'd rather not cut tape at bedtime.
