U Brands magnetic chalkboard 24 x 36 - large rustic frame board
The U Brands 24 x 36 inch magnetic chalkboard is the large-board pick in our best chalkboards guide. It costs about $40 and holds 4.4 stars from about 870 Amazon reviews.
Why it stands out
Size for the money. Two feet by three feet is enough to split into sections: a weekly calendar on one side, a grocery list on the other, a corner for reminders or the kids. Many framed boards this size cost noticeably more. This one is only about $5 more than the much smaller Loddie Doddie 18 x 22 in board.
The other thing is the surface. U Brands says the matte black surface works with standard chalk or liquid chalk markers. Plenty of framed boards don't say either way, and liquid chalk can stain a porous surface, so a listing that names both is useful if you like bright marker colors.
Features from the listing
- 24 x 36 in, magnetic surface for notes and photos
- Rustic wood-style frame
- Mounting hardware and instructions included; hangs vertically or horizontally
- Matte surface U Brands describes as stain-resistant and "ghost-proof"
Treat "ghost-proof" as the maker's wording. Any chalkboard can ghost if the same writing stays up for weeks. Clean it with a barely damp microfiber cloth and change the board often. If you use stick chalk, season it first by rubbing chalk over the whole surface and wiping it off. The chalkboard buying guide covers both chalk types.
Mounting
A board this size puts real leverage on its fixings. Screw into a stud if you can, or use drywall anchors rated for the weight. Don't rely on picture nails.
Who it's for
- Family command centers in a kitchen or mudroom
- Home offices where you want a big planning surface
- Small cafes or shops that need an indoor menu board
- Anyone who wants to use liquid chalk markers on a wall board
Who should skip it
Anyone short on wall space. Also anyone who needs a board outdoors, since this is an indoor board.
Alternatives
For a smaller wall, the Loddie Doddie 18 x 22 in is about $35 and has a much larger review base. For a sidewalk menu, the Chezerra A-frame is double-sided and folds flat. Browse the chalkboard shop for current prices.
