Best Chalkboards 2026: Magnetic, Fridge, Sidewalk & Peel-and-Stick Picks

Best Chalkboards 2026: Magnetic, Fridge, Sidewalk & Peel-and-Stick Picks

The best chalkboard for most homes is the Loddie Doddie 18 x 22 inch magnetic board (about $35). It holds magnets, hangs either way up and has a stain-resistant surface. The budget pick is the Chalky Crown fridge board at about $10, with four liquid chalk markers. For more room, the 24 x 36 inch U Brands is about $40.

Most people shopping for a chalkboard want one of four things: a framed board for the kitchen or office wall, something that sticks to the fridge, a sidewalk sign for a business or a wedding, or a stick-on surface for a kid's room. One board can't do all four, so this list has one pick for each, plus a bigger wall board for anyone who needs the space.

I picked these from Amazon listings, specs and buyer reviews. I haven't hung them in my own house, so I won't pretend I have. Prices below are Amazon US prices at the end of September 2026 and they move around.

(If you searched for "blackboard," same thing. Chalkboard is the American word for it.)

1. Loddie Doddie Magnetic Chalkboard, 18 x 22 in -- Best Overall

Check price on Amazon | Product details

Best for: a kitchen, entryway or home office wall Skip if: you want lots of writing space (see the U Brands below)

This is the one I'd send most people to. It's a framed chalkboard with a rustic wood look, and the surface is magnetic, so the grocery list, a takeout menu and a school photo can all share the board with whatever you've written in chalk. Loddie Doddie includes the mounting hardware, and the board hangs vertically or horizontally. You'll need a screwdriver and about ten minutes.

The listing calls the surface stain-resistant. That's the thing that separates a decent board from the cheap kind where last month's to-do list never quite goes away. Buyers seem to agree: the listing sits at 4.5 stars from roughly 4,700 reviews. That count is pooled across the sizes and frame colors sold on the same page, so it says more about the product line than about this exact size.

At 18 x 22 inches it's big enough for a week of dinners or a short to-do list without taking over the wall. If you want it bigger, the same listing offers a 24 x 36 inch version with a white frame for about $60.

The one gap: Loddie Doddie's listing doesn't say whether this board takes liquid chalk markers. If you plan to use them, try a corner first.

About $35.

Pros

  • Magnetic surface, so it doubles as a notice board
  • Hangs either way up; hardware included
  • Stain-resistant surface, according to the listing
  • Huge review base and a 4.5-star average

Cons

  • Smallish at 18 x 22 in
  • No word on liquid chalk marker compatibility
  • Rustic frame won't suit every room

2. U Brands Magnetic Chalkboard, 24 x 36 in -- Best Large

Check price on Amazon | Product details

Best for: family command centers, home offices, menu boards Skip if: your wall space is tight

Two feet by three feet is a lot of board. Room for a full weekly calendar on one side and a running grocery list on the other, with a corner left over for the kids. U Brands says the matte surface works with standard chalk or liquid chalk markers, which none of the other wall boards here promise. That alone makes it the one to get if you like the bright, crisp look of liquid chalk.

The surface is magnetic, and U Brands calls it "ghost-proof." I'd treat that as a claim rather than a guarantee. Any chalkboard will ghost eventually if the same words stay up for weeks. Hardware and instructions come in the box, and it hangs vertically or horizontally. The frame is a rustic wood style.

For the size, the price is the surprise. At about $40 it's only about $5 more than the much smaller Loddie Doddie. It holds 4.4 stars from about 870 reviews.

At this size, find a stud or use proper drywall anchors rather than trusting a couple of nails.

Pros

  • 24 x 36 in for about $40
  • Works with stick chalk and liquid chalk markers, per the listing
  • Magnetic; hangs either orientation

Cons

  • Fewer reviews than the Loddie Doddie
  • "Ghost-proof" is the maker's wording; seasoning and regular cleaning still help
  • Needs secure anchors at this size

3. Chalky Crown Magnetic Menu Board, 15.6 x 11.6 in -- Best for the Fridge

Check price on Amazon | Product details

Best for: meal planning, grocery lists, chore charts Skip if: your fridge is stainless steel

No drilling with this one. It's a flexible magnetic black board that goes straight on the fridge, and it comes with four bold liquid chalk markers. You get the chalkboard look without the dust. Writing comes off with a wet or damp cloth, which also means it won't smudge when someone brushes past it on the way to the milk.

It's about $10 and has 4.6 stars from around 9,000 reviews, the most of anything here.

The catch is important, and Chalky Crown says so up front: it only sticks to real magnetic metal. Many stainless steel fridges aren't magnetic, and it won't hold on glass either. Try a fridge magnet on your door before you order. If it holds, so will this.

Shake the markers before each use and press the tip down a few times to get the ink flowing.

Pros

  • About $10 with four markers included
  • Wet-erase surface doesn't smudge by accident
  • Biggest review count on this list

Cons

  • Won't stick to most stainless steel fridges
  • Meant for liquid chalk markers, not stick chalk
  • Small enough for one list or one week's meals, not both

4. Chezerra A-Frame Chalkboard Sign, 40 x 20 in -- Best Sidewalk Sign

Check price on Amazon | Product details

Best for: cafes, shops, salons, weddings and parties Skip if: it'll be left out in the rain

A sandwich board for the sidewalk or the entrance to a wedding reception. It stands 40 inches tall, the frame is solid paulownia wood (a light wood, so it's easy to carry), and each side has a 29.4 x 17.3 inch writing area. Both faces are magnetic, so you can pin up a printed menu or photo beside the handwriting.

Chezerra says the matte surface is anti-ghosting and takes chalk or liquid markers. The box includes eight liquid chalk markers, two cleaning cloths and a sandbag to weigh the base down, which you'll want on a windy street. Heavy-duty hinges and a metal chain hold the A-shape open, and it folds flat for storage.

Weather is the limit. The listing says to avoid using it on rainy days and to wipe it dry if it gets wet so the wood doesn't mold. Bring it in at night.

Before you write anything, peel off the clear protective film. Chezerra flags it on the listing, and it's an easy step to miss.

About $60, 4.3 stars from roughly 450 reviews.

Pros

  • Double-sided and magnetic on both faces
  • Eight liquid chalk markers and a sandbag included
  • Light wood frame, folds flat

Cons

  • Not for rain; wood needs drying if it gets wet
  • Writing area is 29.4 x 17.3 in per side, smaller than the 40 x 20 outer size suggests

5. TAKSDAI Chalkboard Contact Paper, 2 Rolls -- Best Peel & Stick

Check price on Amazon | Product details

Best for: kids' rooms, playrooms, pantry doors, labels Skip if: your walls are textured

Peel-and-stick chalkboard vinyl. You get two rolls, each 18 inches by 6.6 feet, plus ten chalks. That's enough to cover a section of wall at kid height, a pantry door, or cut into dozens of jar labels. There's a grid printed on the back for cutting straight lines or shapes.

The frosted surface takes regular chalk. TAKSDAI says it sticks to smooth surfaces, is water resistant, and peels off without residue, though it also says to pre-test, which is fair. On textured walls or fresh paint, peel-and-stick vinyl may not grip well and can pull paint off when you remove it. Wipe with a damp cloth, not a dry eraser.

It isn't magnetic. If you want magnets on the wall, buy a framed magnetic board instead.

About $13 for both rolls. 4.2 stars from about 3,900 reviews.

Pros

  • Cheap way to cover a big area
  • Cuts to any shape
  • Takes regular chalk; ten included

Cons

  • Not magnetic
  • Results depend on your wall; test a hidden spot first
  • Thin vinyl shows bumps on uneven surfaces

How to choose a chalkboard

Where's it going?

Wall, fridge, sidewalk or a whole section of wall. That settles most of the decision. A framed wall board is the most versatile. A fridge board is cheaper and needs no tools but only fits one list. A sidewalk sign needs to be double-sided and stable. Contact paper is for covering an area no framed board would fit.

Stick chalk or liquid chalk markers?

Stick chalk is cheap and gives the classic dusty look, but the dust goes everywhere. Liquid chalk markers are bolder, come in bright colors and make no dust, but they need a non-porous surface. On a porous one, like real slate or chalkboard paint, the pigment can soak in and stain. Buy a board whose listing names liquid markers if that's what you'll use. From this list, that's the U Brands, the Chalky Crown and the Chezerra.

Do you want it magnetic?

A magnetic chalkboard has steel behind the writing surface, so it doubles as a bulletin board for photos, invitations and kids' artwork. Three of the five picks here are magnetic. The fridge board works the other way around: it's a magnet itself.

What size?

  • Fridge: around 15 x 12 in fits most doors.
  • Kitchen or office wall: 18 x 22 in is a good size for a single list or a weekly plan.
  • Family command center or menu board: 24 x 36 in gives you room to divide into sections.
  • Sidewalk sign: check the writing area, not just the outer size. The Chezerra is 40 x 20 in overall but each face is 29.4 x 17.3 in.

Inside or outside?

None of these boards is waterproof. Sidewalk signs are made to stand outdoors during the day, not to live there. A dedicated outdoor board needs a sealed, waterproof face, and even then rain will wash stick chalk away.

Should you wait for a sale? What 3 years of prices show

Probably not. Across three years of daily Amazon prices (October 2023 to October 2026), the typical board above was 10% or more below its usual price (its 90-day median) on just 4.1% of days. The TAKSDAI contact paper never got there. Its lowest price was $12.97, against a usual $12.99.

Black Friday is the worst bet. Not one board was cut by 10% or more over the Black Friday-Cyber Monday weekend in any year, and November was the dearest month, averaging 8.4% above the 3-year median. August was the cheapest, but only by 1.4%.

The exception is the U Brands 24 x 36 board. It was on sale 18% of the time and dropped to $31.41 in August 2026, against a typical $42.39.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best chalkboard?

For most homes, the Loddie Doddie 18 x 22 inch magnetic chalkboard with a rustic frame. It costs about $35, holds magnets, hangs either way up and comes with mounting hardware. If you want more room to write, the U Brands 24 x 36 inch magnetic chalkboard costs about $40 and the listing says it works with both stick chalk and liquid chalk markers.

Is a chalkboard the same as a blackboard?

Yes. Chalkboard is the usual US term and blackboard is the older or British one. Same dark matte surface, same chalk. Amazon sellers often use both words in the same listing title.

Can I use liquid chalk markers on any chalkboard?

No. They're designed for non-porous surfaces. On porous surfaces like slate or chalkboard paint, the pigment can sink in and leave a stain. If the listing doesn't mention liquid markers, test a small corner first.

How do I stop a chalkboard from ghosting?

Season it before first use: rub the side of a chalk stick over the entire surface, then wipe it off with a dry cloth or eraser. After that, clean with a barely damp microfiber cloth and don't leave the same writing up for weeks. Equal parts white vinegar and water usually clears stubborn ghosting. Boards meant for liquid markers skip the seasoning and just need a damp cloth.

Can a chalkboard go outside?

For a few hours, sure. Leave one out in the weather and the frame and surface will suffer. None of the boards here is waterproof, and the Chezerra listing specifically says to keep it out of the rain.

Will a magnetic fridge chalkboard stick to stainless steel?

Often not. Many stainless steel fridges aren't magnetic, because the common nickel-containing grades of stainless steel are non-magnetic. Chalky Crown says its board won't stick to stainless steel. Put an ordinary fridge magnet on the door: if it stays put, the board will too.

The verdict

For most kitchens and home offices, get the Loddie Doddie 18 x 22 in magnetic chalkboard for about $35. If you want more room or plan to use liquid chalk markers, the U Brands 24 x 36 in is barely more money.

For the fridge, the Chalky Crown menu board costs about $10, as long as your fridge door holds a magnet. Businesses and event planners should look at the Chezerra A-frame. And for a kids' room wall, TAKSDAI contact paper covers a lot of space for about $13.
