The Core 400S-P is the biggest of Levoit's Core purifiers on this site, at about $190. Its AHAM Verifide CADR is 231 CFM for smoke, 240 for dust and 259 for pollen, and Levoit rates it for up to 1,733 sq ft with one air change per hour. It sits at 4.7 stars from roughly 25,000 reviews.

Who it's for

Living rooms, open-plan spaces and large bedrooms, for people who want the purifier to adjust itself. The laser PM2.5 sensor (Levoit calls it AirSight Plus) reads particle levels and auto mode sets the fan speed from that reading. Burn some toast and the fan speeds up. When the air clears, it drops back down.

You also get the VeSync app and Alexa or Google voice control, so you can check readings or change the fan speed without walking over to it.

Who should skip it

If your room is a standard bedroom, you're paying for capacity you won't use. The Core 300-P costs well under half as much, and its 143 CFM smoke CADR is plenty for a room that size. And if you have no interest in apps or voice assistants, part of what you're paying for goes unused.

Filter

It uses a 3-in-1 filter: a pre-filter, a HEPA-grade main filter and an activated carbon layer. The carbon stage handles everyday cooking and pet odors. On its lowest setting it runs at about 24 dB, which is quiet enough for most sleepers.

Core 400S-P vs Coway Airmega AP-1512HH

These two are closer than the prices suggest. The Coway Mighty posts a similar CADR (233 smoke, 246 dust, 240 pollen) and also has an auto mode driven by an air quality sensor. The differences:

• The Coway has no app. The Levoit does.
• The Coway adds an ionizer, which you can switch off. The Levoit is purely mechanical.
• Coway gives a 3-year warranty.

If you want app control, get the Levoit. If you'd rather never touch your phone and you catch the Coway on sale, it's a fair swap.

Core 400S-P vs Dyson TP07

The Dyson TP07 costs more than three times as much and doubles as a fan. Dyson doesn't publish an AHAM CADR, so you can't compare raw cleaning speed directly.
