For a large room, the best pick here is the Levoit Core 400S-P (about $190). Its 231 CFM smoke CADR gives about 3.5 air changes an hour in a 500 sq ft room, and auto mode handles open-plan particle spikes. The Winix 5510 (about $135) moves the most air per dollar. Past about 600 sq ft, plan on two units.
Most air purifiers are sized for bedrooms and smaller living rooms. And when manufacturers quote a big coverage figure, they usually mean the air gets cleaned once per hour, which is 1 ACH (air change per hour). For a large open-plan space, that's not enough. You want at least 2-3 ACH for a real improvement in air quality, and more if someone in the house has allergies.
Some real numbers. The Levoit Core 400S-P is rated for "up to 1,733 sq ft", but that's the 1 ACH figure. AHAM's own room-size rating works to roughly 4.8 ACH, and its rule of thumb is that the smoke CADR should be at least two-thirds of the floor area. For the 400S-P, 231 CFM × 1.5 ≈ 350 sq ft. So a 600 sq ft open-plan kitchen and living area needs a smoke CADR of around 400 CFM to hit the same standard, or two purifiers. The EPA's sizing chart for portable air cleaners lands in the same place: a minimum CADR of 390 for 600 sq ft.
None of the three picks below reaches 400 CFM on its own. The Coway Mighty has almost the same airflow as the Levoit: AHAM CADR of 233 for smoke, 246 for dust and 240 for pollen. AHAM rates it for rooms of 361 sq ft, and Coway quotes up to 1,748 sq ft at one air change per hour. It's been a US bestseller for years, with about 29,000 reviews at 4.6 stars.
The difference is that there's no app. The sensor, auto mode and color LED air quality ring are all on the unit itself, along with an eco mode, a timer and a filter indicator. If you want a large-room purifier that you set once and ignore, this is it.
Filtration runs in four stages: a washable pre-filter, a carbon deodorization filter, an ionizer (Coway's "Bipolar Device", which you can switch off) and a True HEPA filter rated at 99.97% at 0.3 microns. The 3-year warranty is longer than most in this price range.

Sizing a Purifier for a Large Room
Calculate your actual air volume, not just floor area. AHAM's room ratings assume 8-foot ceilings, but plenty of US homes have 9-foot, 10-foot or vaulted ceilings in the main living space. A 500 sq ft room with 8-foot ceilings holds 4,000 cubic feet of air. The same floor area with 10-foot ceilings holds 5,000 cubic feet, 25% more. Use your real ceiling height.
ACH targets. For general air quality in a large room: 2 ACH minimum. For allergy management: 3-4 ACH. For asthma: 4-5 ACH. To work out ACH, multiply the purifier's smoke CADR by 60, then divide by your room's volume in cubic feet. Example: the Winix 5510 in a 600 sq ft room with 9-foot ceilings is 253 × 60 ÷ 5,400 ≈ 2.8 ACH.
Single large unit vs two smaller units. For L-shaped or irregular open-plan spaces, two purifiers placed at opposite ends of the room sometimes outperform a single large unit. Air doesn't flow around an L-shape the way coverage figures assume, since those are based on rectangular rooms with nothing in the way.
Open-plan kitchens specifically. Cooking puts out particles, grease aerosols and odors, so the activated carbon in your purifier will saturate faster here.
