Franklin X-40 outdoor pickleballs, 12-pack (optic yellow) - the regular player's refill

This is the X-40 most outdoor players end up reordering. Twelve balls in optic yellow, about $29 on Amazon, which works out to roughly $2.42 a ball. The X-40 listing carries a 4.7-star average from about 26,000 ratings, shared across its pack sizes and colors.

Same ball, bigger box

Nothing changes from the 3-pack except the count. It's the one-piece, 40-hole polyethylene ball at the regulation 26 g and 74 mm, USA Pickleball approved, and Franklin lists it as the official ball of the US Open Pickleball Championships, USA Pickleball and the APP Tour. Our Franklin X-40 review covers how it plays. This page is about whether twelve is the right number.

Who the 12-pack suits

Twelve balls is the size for a household or a regular foursome. You can keep a few in the bag, a few in the car and a few at home, and still retire a cracked one without rationing. Our pickleball balls for kids guide suggests it for teenagers playing outdoors a few times a week, since they hit hard and go through balls fast.

It's a bit much if you play once a month. Start with the 3-pack (about $3.32 a ball) and see whether you like the ball first.

If you run sessions for a club, twelve won't last long. The 100-pack brings the cost down to about $1.80 a ball, and our bulk buying guide runs the numbers on every pack.

What our price tracking shows

This listing barely moves. Over three years its usual price was about $29.11 and the highest we saw was $31.18, so today's price is normal rather than a deal. It was 10% or more below its usual price on only about 11% of days.

The exception was November 2024, when it dropped to $11.99, roughly $1 a ball. Black Friday has been the best bet since: it fell about 32% over the 2023 Black Friday weekend and about 24% in 2025. Prime Day 2025 brought a smaller cut of about 15%.

The Ember 12-pack is the identical ball in orange, and its price swings more. If you don't mind the color, check both before you buy.

One storage note

Franklin says the X-40 performs best "in average temperatures." A box of twelve tends to live in a garage or a trunk, and hard outdoor plastic doesn't like the cold. Our cold weather guide explains how to keep them from cracking early.
