Onix Pure 2 Outdoor Pickleball Balls Specifically Designed and Optimized for Pickleball Neon Green 6-Pack

The Onix Pure 2 is an outdoor ball and one of the better-known alternatives to the Franklin X-40. This 6-pack in neon green costs about $18, or roughly $3 a ball, and averages 4.6 stars from about 705 reviews.

What Onix says it does

Onix builds its case around two things: weight and durability.

The ball is "weighted heavier," which Onix calls True Flight Technology. A heavier ball holds its line better in wind, and that's the main reason to choose it if your local courts are exposed. Onix doesn't give an exact weight on the listing, so we can't tell you how much heavier it is.

On durability, the Pure 2 has a welded seam that Onix says resists splitting, and the company calls it the most durable pickleball on the market. That's a brand claim, not an independent result, so treat it as a claim. Balls with a seam are a different build from one-piece balls like the X-40 and the GoSports GS 40, which have no seam to split.

The listing also mentions a consistent bounce and precision-drilled holes aligned for balance.

Who it's for

Outdoor players on windy, open courts are the obvious fit. It's also worth a try if your current balls keep splitting and you want a different build.

Who should skip it

If you're playing in a sanctioned event, check which ball is being used and practice with that one. Franklin lists the X-40 as the official ball of the US Open, USA Pickleball and the APP Tour.

Indoor players should skip it too. It's an outdoor ball. Our indoor vs outdoor guide explains why that matters.

Hard outdoor balls of every brand get more brittle in the cold. If you play in a northern US winter, our cold-weather guide covers what to do.

Alternatives

The Franklin X-40 3-pack has about 26,000 reviews to the Pure 2's 705, and it's the tournament ball. At about $10 for three, it costs slightly more per ball. If price matters more than brand, the GoSports GS 40 12-pack is about $1.42 a ball.
