GoSports GS 40 outdoor pickleballs, 12-pack - USAPA-certified balls at about $1.42 each

The GoSports GS 40 is the budget pick among certified outdoor balls. Twelve cost about $17, which works out to roughly $1.42 a ball. It averages 4.4 stars from about 936 reviews.

What you get for the money

On paper it matches the premium outdoor balls. It's USAPA certified for tournament play, it's one-piece with no seam, and it has 40 machine-drilled holes. Each ball weighs 0.9 oz and measures 2.9 in, the same as the Franklin X-40. GoSports says the one-piece build resists cracks and dents on outdoor courts.

GoSports also says it works in standard pickleball ball machines. That matters if you drill alone, because a machine eats through a lot of balls and a cheaper certified ball keeps the cost down. It comes in a 36-pack too if twelve isn't enough.

What you don't get is the track record. About 936 reviews is a reasonable sample, but the X-40 has around 26,000, and its 4.7-star average is higher.

Who it's for

  • Recreational outdoor players who want certified balls without paying brand prices
  • Anyone using a ball machine
  • Groups, clubs and families who need a dozen balls at once
  • Beginners who'll lose a few balls over fences and into bushes. Our beginners' guide covers what else to look for.

Who should skip it

Tournament players who want to practice with the exact ball they'll face. In US Open, USA Pickleball and APP Tour events, that's the Franklin X-40.

Indoor players should look elsewhere too, since this is a hard 40-hole outdoor ball. And if you play in near-freezing temperatures, keep in mind that all hard plastic balls get more brittle in the cold. See our cold-weather guide.

Alternatives

The Franklin X-40 3-pack costs about $10, or roughly $3.32 a ball. You pay more for the tournament ball and the much larger review base. For kids or very new players, the GoSports Q-Foam is softer and quieter, but it isn't regulation.

If you're buying in bigger quantities, our bulk pickleball balls guide compares per-ball prices across pack sizes. The GS 40 also appears in our pickleball balls for kids guide.
