JBER acoustic foam panels, 12-pack - cut echo, not noise from next door

These are 12 wedge-pattern foam panels, each 1 x 12 x 12 inches, covering about 12 square feet in total. The pack costs about $14 and has 4.1 stars from around 4,800 Amazon reviews. Before you buy them for a bedroom, it helps to be clear about what foam can and can't do.

Absorbing vs blocking

Acoustic foam absorbs sound that's already in the room. It soaks up reflections off bare walls, so speech sounds less boomy and a small room feels less echoey. That's why you see it in home studios and on the wall behind a streamer's desk.

Blocking sound from outside is a different job. A neighbor's TV, a barking dog or traffic comes through walls, windows and gaps. Stopping that takes mass and airtight seals. An inch of light foam adds almost no mass, so these panels won't make much difference to noise from next door. If that's your problem, our guide to soundproofing a bedroom on a budget covers the fixes that work, starting with gaps under the door.

When they do make sense

  • A home office or recording corner where your voice echoes on calls
  • A bare, hard-floored bedroom that sounds hollow
  • Gaming rooms and small home theaters

JBER says the foam is 30 kg/m³ high-density polyurethane (about 1.9 lb/ft³) with flame-retardant properties, and that it expands back to shape after unpacking. You can fix them with glue, double-sided tape or nails. Glue can pull paint off when you remove it, so renters should pick removable tape or hang the panels on a board.

Who should skip them

Anyone trying to stop noise coming in from outside the room. Twelve square feet also isn't much, so treating a whole room means several packs.

Better buys for noise

For sound coming under a door, the Everlasting Comfort draft stopper seals the gap for about $24 with no drilling. If the noise is getting through anyway, cover it: the Yogasleep Dohm Classic masks steady noise, and Mack's Pillow Soft earplugs block it at your ears.
