FELIWAY Optimum diffuser - pheromones for stress-related cat scratching
FELIWAY Optimum is a plug-in diffuser that releases a synthetic cat pheromone. The starter kit costs about $30 and averages 3.9 stars from about 20,500 ratings.
What it does
The diffuser plugs into a wall outlet and gives off a pheromone-based formula continuously. FELIWAY says it helps reduce signs of stress in cats and tension between cats, and lists scratching among the stress-related behaviors it targets, along with urine spraying, hiding and fearful reactions to change. It's not a sedative.
Each diffuser covers up to 700 square feet, and each refill lasts up to about four weeks, per the listing. FELIWAY asks for the vents to point up and for at least 4 feet of clearance around it.
When it's relevant to scratching
Most furniture scratching is normal claw care, and a diffuser won't change that. A pheromone diffuser makes more sense when scratching looks like stress or marking:
- Multi-cat homes where cats are tense with each other
- Scratching that started after a move, new furniture, a new baby or a new pet
- Scratching near doors and windows, or mostly when you're out
Even then, it's one piece of the plan alongside protectors and a scratching post. Our how to stop cats scratching furniture guide explains how they fit together.
Honest expectations
The 3.9-star average reflects mixed results. Plenty of buyers report calmer cats; plenty see no change. Give it several weeks before deciding, and keep it running continuously. If your cat seems anxious or its behavior has changed suddenly, talk to your vet, since there can be a medical cause.
Who should skip it
If your cat is calm and simply likes the couch, start with a deterrent and a scratching post instead. That's cheaper and more direct. It also needs an outlet near where the cat spends time.
Alternatives and pairings
Pair it with Panther Armor double-sided sheets on the target spots and a SmartCat scratching post beside them. For the protector options, see our best cat scratch protectors.
