LectroFan Classic - 20 non-looping fan and white noise sounds
The LectroFan Classic is the digital answer to the Yogasleep Dohm. Where the Dohm uses a real fan, the LectroFan generates its sounds electronically, and Adaptive Sound Technologies says none of its 20 sounds loop. It costs about $55 and has 4.6 stars from around 24,900 Amazon reviews.
What you get
Twenty sounds, split between fan noises and white noise variations. There are no birds, waves or lullabies. That's deliberate. The idea is a steady, even sound that covers snoring, traffic and noisy neighbors without anything for your brain to latch on to.
Volume goes up in fine steps rather than the two-speed-and-a-collar setup of a mechanical fan. There's a built-in sleep timer that switches it off after a set time, if you only want sound while you fall asleep.
It runs on USB power and is small enough to pack, so it works in hotel rooms as well as at home.
Why "non-looping" matters
Many cheap machines and phone apps play a recorded clip on repeat. If the clip is short, some people start hearing the seam, a tiny click or a pattern that repeats every few seconds. Once you notice it, it's hard to stop. A sound that's generated continuously doesn't have that seam. Not everyone is sensitive to it, but if you are, this is the main reason to pay more.
Who it's for
- Light sleepers who want precise volume control
- People who like fan noise but want to try other textures of white noise
- Travelers who want the same sound at home and on the road
Who should skip it
If you want nature sounds or a built-in battery, this isn't the machine. It needs a USB power source every night. Parents choosing a nursery machine should know the AAP advises keeping any sound machine away from the crib and at a low volume.
Alternatives
The Yogasleep Dohm Classic is about $5 cheaper and makes its sound with a real fan, which some people find more natural. The Dreamegg D3 Pro costs less, adds nature sounds and runs about 12 hours on its battery.
