Dreamegg D3 Pro - a rechargeable white noise machine with 29 sounds

The Dreamegg D3 Pro is a small sound machine with a battery in it. That one feature sets it apart from the Dohm and LectroFan, which both need an outlet. It costs about $40 and has 4.5 stars from around 4,200 Amazon reviews.

The sounds

There are 29 in total: 7 white noise variations, 7 fan sounds and 15 others. Those include rain, thunder rain, sea waves, a brook, campfire, crickets, a lullaby, a music box, shushing and a "fetal tone". It's a wider mix than the fan-and-static machines, which suits households where adults and kids want different things.

Battery and power

The 1200mAh battery is rated for 12 hours of continuous play on a full charge. That's enough for one night, not a long weekend, so plan on charging it daily when you travel. A wall plug and USB cable come in the box, and it runs plugged in at home.

There's a timer, or you can leave it on all night. It also has a headphone jack, which is unusual on a sound machine and handy if you want the sound without waking anyone else.

Who it's for

  • Travelers who want a machine that works without hunting for an outlet by the hotel bed
  • Parents who move between the nursery, the car and grandma's house
  • Anyone who wants nature sounds as well as white noise

Who should skip it

If you want the most natural fan sound and will only use it at home, the Yogasleep Dohm Classic makes its sound with a real fan and never needs charging. People who just want the cheapest workable option can spend less, too.

Dreamegg markets this heavily for babies. If that's your plan, the AAP advises keeping sound machines away from the crib and at a low volume. Put it across the room, not clipped to the crib rail.

Alternatives

The LectroFan Classic is about $15 more and sticks to fan and white noise sounds, with no battery. The Magicteam 40-sound machine costs about $24, has even more sounds and runs on AC or USB power, but has no battery.
