The Winix 5510 replaces the 5500-2, which was one of the most popular mid-size purifiers on Amazon. It sells on the same listing, so the roughly 32,000 reviews (4.6 stars) are mostly for the older model. Keep that in mind when you read them. It costs about $135.

AHAM Verifide rates it for a 392 sq ft room, with a CADR of 253 CFM for smoke, 252 for dust and 247 for pollen. Winix says it can cycle the air once an hour in up to 1,882 sq ft. Its smoke and dust numbers are higher than those of the Levoit Core 400S-P and the Coway Mighty, both of which cost more.

Who it's for

Living rooms, large bedrooms and open-plan spaces, for buyers who want strong cleaning numbers without paying $190 or more. It covers the usual features. There's an air quality LED, a smart sensor with auto mode, and a light-sensing sleep mode that kicks in when the room goes dark. The Winix Smart app handles remote control.

On its lowest speed it runs at 23.5 dB.

How it compares

Against the Levoit Core 400S-P: the Levoit costs about $55 more and has a slightly lower smoke CADR (231). It does have a laser PM2.5 sensor and Alexa/Google support. If voice control doesn't matter to you, the Winix gives you more cleaning for less.

Against the Coway AP-1512HH Mighty: the CADR figures are close (233 smoke on the Coway). The Coway has no app, while the Winix does. The Mighty is often discounted, so compare the prices on the day you buy.

Who should skip it

Anyone buying for a small bedroom. For that, a Levoit Core 300-P is enough and costs less. Skip it too if you want a unit with no ionizing or plasma features at all, even ones you can switch off. A plain HEPA-and-carbon Levoit is the simpler choice.
