Chalkola 1mm extra fine white chalk markers, 6-pack

A 1mm tip is about as thin as liquid chalk markers get. This Chalkola pack is six white markers, all 1mm, for about $15. It averages 4.5 stars from 354 ratings, which is a much smaller pool than Chalkola's bestselling sets, so give the score a bit less weight.

What a 1mm tip is good for

Small writing. Prices on a café menu board, dates on a wall calendar, jar labels, the outlines and shading inside bigger lettering. Anything with a lot of words in a small space.

It's the wrong pen for a headline you want read from the sidewalk. Filling in a big letter with a 1mm tip takes forever and looks streaky. For that you want 6mm or wider, and Chalkola's 1mm and 6mm combo pack costs the same as this one if you need both.

Six identical fine markers suits a classroom, or a restaurant that rewrites its specials daily and goes through pens. For one wedding sign, it's more of one size than most people need.

Surfaces

The listing names wedding signs, storefronts, milestone boards, menus, LED boards, contact paper, mirrors and car windows. Underneath all of those is one rule. On non-porous surfaces like glass and mirrors, the ink erases wet or dry. On porous surfaces such as wood, Chalkola says it's permanent.

That makes chalkboards a gamble. Porcelain and sealed chalkboards are fine. A lot of painted boards are porous enough that liquid chalk ghosts or stains. Before you write a full menu, try a few letters in a corner, give them time to dry, and wipe.

The Chalky Crown magnetic fridge board comes with liquid chalk markers, so it's clearly meant for them, and fine tips suit its grocery-list size. Our chalkboard guide sorts other boards by where they go and what they'll take.

About fraying

The usual complaint with thin chalk markers is tips that fray or split after a few weeks. Chalkola claims these stay fray-free under heavy use. Nothing on the listing proves it, and 354 reviews is a modest sample. Pressing lightly helps any fine tip last longer, and so does putting the cap back on every time.
