Compare prices, track deals, and find the best value

The Remington Damage Protection Hair Dryer costs about $23 on Amazon. For that you get 1875 watts, ceramic, ionic and tourmaline technology, a diffuser, a concentrator nozzle, a removable filter and a cool shot button. That's a full kit for less than a takeout dinner.

It also has a 4.6-star average from roughly 49,800 Amazon reviews, which makes it one of the best-selling hair dryers on the site. Popular and good aren't always the same thing, though. I've gone through the specs, Remington's own claims and how it compares with dryers at four and twenty times the price to see which this one is.

Power: 1875W is the US ceiling

1875W can look modest next to the bigger numbers on dryers sold in Europe, but those run on 230V outlets. In the US, standard household outlets are 120V on 15-amp circuits, and 1875W is the practical maximum for a plug-in dryer. Almost every full-size US dryer, from drugstore models to the ghd Helios, lands at that number.

So the Remington isn't underpowered. On wattage alone it matches dryers costing ten times more. What the expensive ones change is how the air is moved and controlled, not how much power they pull from the wall. Our hair dryer wattage guide goes into this in more detail.

Ceramic, ionic and tourmaline: what each one does

Remington stacks three technologies here, and they get blurred together in marketing, so here's the short version.

Ceramic refers to the heating components. Ceramic heats more evenly than bare metal, which means fewer hot spots blasting one section of hair while the rest stays damp.

Ionic means the dryer releases negative ions. The usual explanation is that they reduce static on the hair surface, so you get fewer flyaways and a flatter, smoother finish. Frizz-prone and thick hair tends to show the difference most.

Tourmaline is a crystal mineral used as a coating. It's marketed as boosting the ionic effect and smoothing the heat further. The gain over ceramic plus ionic alone is small, but it doesn't cost you anything extra at this price.

Our explainer on what an ionic hair dryer does covers the science and where the claims get stretched.

Micro-Conditioner and the "3X more protection" claim

This is the feature the dryer is named after. Remington says its advanced coating gives "3X more protection" during styling and that its proprietary Micro-Conditioner technology keeps hair healthier.

Read the small print, though. The comparison is against a standard Remington dryer, not against rival brands, and the listing doesn't explain how protection was measured. I'd treat it as "better than Remington's basic model" and leave it there. The settings you choose matter more. Low heat on fine or color-treated hair will do more for its condition than any coating.

Settings and the cool shot

Three heat settings and two speeds give you six combinations, which covers every hair type I can think of. Low heat works for fine or damaged hair. Medium is the everyday setting. High is for thick or very wet hair when speed matters more than gentleness.

The cool shot button sets the style once you're done. Remington says it also helps cool the dryer itself and prevents overheating. Remington also calls the dryer quiet, but it doesn't publish a decibel figure, so I can't tell you how it compares with the ghd Helios, which ghd markets on its low noise.

The attachments

The concentrator nozzle narrows the airflow for directed styling. For a smooth blowout, aim it down the hair shaft and follow with a round brush.

The diffuser spreads the air over a wider area at lower intensity, which is what curly and wavy hair needs to hold its pattern without frizzing out. Remington's listing makes a point of telling you to attach both securely so they don't pop off mid-dry. Our guide on how to use a hair dryer diffuser has the technique.

At the premium end, the ghd Air and ghd Helios don't include a diffuser at all. You get both here for $23.

The removable filter

Hair, dust and product residue build up on the intake. A clogged filter starves the motor of air, the dryer runs hot, and eventually the safety cutoff kicks in. Remington mentions the filter three times on its listing and ties it directly to consistent heat and reliable power-on. Pull it off and clear it every few weeks.

What it doesn't do

There's no automatic heat adjustment, no temperature sensor, no scalp mode and no attachment memory. That's what $449 buys you with the Dyson. Remington also doesn't list dual voltage, so assume it's 120V only and buy a dedicated travel dryer if you're heading abroad.

For $23, none of that is a complaint. You're buying a full-power dryer with ionic conditioning and two attachments. That's the whole pitch, and it holds up.

2. ghd Air Hair Dryer

The ghd Air costs about $203, roughly nine times the price of the Remington. ghd gives it a professional-strength motor that it says dries hair 2x faster than regular consumer dryers, plus ionic technology, variable temperature and power controls, and a 9 ft cord.

The variable controls are the practical upgrade. Instead of three fixed heat steps, you can dial in exactly the heat and airflow your hair needs. The 9 ft cord helps if your outlet isn't right next to the mirror.

What you lose is the diffuser. The ghd Air ships with a concentrator nozzle only, and the diffuser is sold separately. It's rated 4.2 stars from about 580 reviews, a little lower than the Remington. Read our ghd Air review for the full picture.

If you dry your hair every day and want salon-style control, the ghd Air earns its price. If you dry two or three times a week, the Remington covers most of the job for a fraction of the cost.

3. Dyson Supersonic Nural

The Dyson Supersonic Nural lists at about $450, though it's often seen around $350 on sale. That's 15 to 20 times the Remington's price.

The difference is automation. Nural sensors switch features on for you. Scalp protect mode adjusts the air temperature to hold about 130°F at the scalp when you're drying close to the roots. Attachment learning recognizes each attachment and remembers your heat and airflow settings for it. You get four heat settings from 82°F to 221°F, three airflow settings and five attachments, including a diffuser and a styling concentrator. It averages 4.4 stars from about 365 reviews.

Is it worth 20 times the price? For most people, no. The Dyson makes it harder to overheat your hair and it's more pleasant to use daily, but the Remington still gets your hair dry and smooth. The full Dyson Supersonic Nural review goes through who the Dyson is really for.

Who Should Buy the Remington Damage Protection

Buy it if: you want a full-power ionic dryer that comes with a diffuser and a concentrator for around $23. It's the obvious pick for a first apartment, a dorm room, a guest bathroom or a short-term rental, or for replacing a dryer that just died.

Think twice if: you have very fine or heavily processed hair and want finer heat control than three fixed settings, or you need to know the cord length before buying (Remington doesn't list it on Amazon).

Skip it if: you've already decided you want automatic heat control. Nothing at this price does that. Buy the Dyson and enjoy it, but know that the gap in how your hair actually looks is smaller than the gap in price.

The Verdict

The Remington Damage Protection Hair Dryer costs about $23, runs at the same 1875W as dryers ten times its price, and ships with both a diffuser and a concentrator. The "3X more protection" claim is only measured against Remington's own basic model, and there are no smart features. Neither changes how well it dries your hair. A 4.6-star average from nearly 50,000 buyers backs that up.

If you want more control, the ghd Air at about $203 is the step up. If you want the most automation money can buy, the Dyson Supersonic Nural is in a different price bracket. Neither makes the Remington a bad buy.

Remington Damage Protection: Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Remington Damage Protection hair dryer good for curly hair?

Yes. It comes with a diffuser, which spreads the airflow so curls keep their shape instead of getting blown apart. Use low or medium heat on the low speed setting, scrunch upward, and finish with the cool shot.

How powerful is the Remington Damage Protection hair dryer?

It's rated at 1875W, the standard top rating for US hair dryers that plug into a regular 120V outlet. You won't find a US household dryer meaningfully more powerful, so on wattage it's level with dryers costing ten times as much.

What does "3X more protection" mean?

It's Remington's own claim, measured against a standard Remington dryer. It refers to the advanced coating plus the Micro-Conditioner technology. Remington doesn't publish the test method on the Amazon listing, so treat it as a comparison within the brand, not an independent result.

Why does my Remington hair dryer keep cutting out?

On any dryer, the most common cause is a clogged intake filter, which makes it overheat. This model has a removable filter, and Remington's listing says to clean it regularly to keep the heat consistent and the dryer powering on reliably.

Is ionic technology actually worth it?

For frizz-prone hair, usually yes. The usual explanation is that negative ions reduce static on the hair surface, which means fewer flyaways and a smoother finish. Results vary by hair type, but at this price you're not paying extra for it.
