Magicteam 20-sound machine - brown, pink and blue noise for about $23
This is Magicteam's smaller lineup: 20 sounds instead of 40, in a wood-grain finish. It costs about $23 and has 4.4 stars from around 2,900 Amazon reviews. The reason to pick it over the 40-sound model is the noise colors.
The sounds
You get white, brown, pink and blue noise, plus fan, brook, rain, ocean, birds and a bonfire. Magicteam says they're non-looping. Brown and pink noise are deeper than white noise, with more rumble and less hiss. Plenty of people who find white noise harsh sleep fine with brown. If you haven't tried them, brown vs white vs pink noise explains the difference.
Volume has 32 levels. The timer runs for 1, 2, 3 or 4 hours, or stays on all night. Like the 40-sound model, it remembers your last sound, volume and timer.
Check the power before you order
The listing calls it a plug-in machine, but it also says this version is battery powered and doesn't include an adapter. Read the current listing and the box contents before you buy so you know what you need. If you want something that plugs straight into the wall with no guesswork, the Magicteam 40-sound machine runs on AC or USB.
It measures 6.4 x 4.1 x 2.4 inches, a little bigger than the 40-sound model.
Who it's for
- People who already know they prefer brown or pink noise
- Buyers on a budget who want simple buttons (Magicteam pitches it as easy for older users)
- A spare machine for a guest room or office
Who should skip it
Anyone who wants a big library of nature sounds, since the 40-sound model has twice as many. Light sleepers who can hear digital loops in recordings may be happier with a real fan, like the Yogasleep Dohm Classic.
For nurseries, the AAP advises keeping sound machines well away from the crib and at a low volume.
Alternatives
The 40-sound Magicteam costs about a dollar more and has a clearer power setup. The Dreamegg D3 Pro costs about $40 and has a rechargeable battery rated for 12 hours.
