Philips SmartSleep Wake-up Light HF3520 - a sunrise alarm with no subscription
The HF3520 is Philips' mid-range wake-up light. It costs about $107 and has a 4.3-star average from around 14,800 reviews, far more than the newer Hatch Restore 3 has.
What it does
Before your alarm time, the lamp slowly brightens through colors that mimic a sunrise. When the alarm goes off, you hear one of five natural sounds or the FM radio. Tap the top to snooze. At night it can run the same thing in reverse, a simulated sunset that dims while you fall asleep.
It also works as a bedside reading lamp with 20 brightness settings, and the clock display dims itself automatically so it isn't glowing at you all night.
The listing doesn't mention an app or a subscription, and you don't need either. Everything is set on the lamp.
About "clinically proven"
The Amazon listing says "clinically proven" and that physicians and pharmacists recommend Philips wake-up lights, but both claims come with asterisks pointing to footnotes that aren't shown. The general idea holds up: light in the morning is one of the main signals your body clock uses. Waking to a brightening room is gentler than a buzzer in the dark, and on winter mornings that matters more. Just don't expect it to fix a sleep problem by itself. Our best sunrise alarm clock guide covers what these lamps can and can't do.
Who it's for
- People who wake up before sunrise for much of the year
- Anyone who hates a loud alarm and wants something simple, with no phone involved
- Rooms with blackout curtains, where no daylight gets in to wake you naturally. This is a good match for the NICETOWN 100% blackout curtains
Who should skip it
If you also want sleep sounds, guided wind-downs and app control, the Hatch Restore 3 does more. It costs about $63 more, though, and some features need a paid subscription.
If your mornings are fine and your evenings are the problem, start with your evening routine before buying a lamp. Our morning routine for energy and wind-down routine without a phone guides are free to try.
