Febreze 3Volution plug-in - what it actually does (and doesn't)
Everyone knows Febreze. It's the plug-in your mum has in the hallway. The question is whether it actually eliminates cooking smells or just covers them up. The honest answer is: a bit of both.
The cyclodextrin thing
Febreze uses beta-cyclodextrin, a ring-shaped molecule derived from corn starch. It physically encapsulates some volatile odour compounds so they can't reach your nose. That's a real mechanism, not marketing. But the encapsulation is reversible. The molecules aren't destroyed. And modern Febreze adds fragrance on top of the cyclodextrin, so you're getting partial trapping plus partial masking.
This is why we rank it third in our charcoal vs sprays vs plug-ins comparison. It does something, but less than charcoal (which adsorbs permanently) or enzymatic sprays (which destroy the compounds).
When it makes sense
Mild background odour between meals. Kitchens that don't do heavy frying. If your cooking is mostly boiling pasta and baking, a plug-in keeps the room smelling pleasant and handles the light residual smell fine.
When it doesn't
Post-curry. Post-fish. Post-anything involving heavy frying. The cyclodextrin can't keep up with the volume of airborne compounds produced by high-heat cooking. For those situations, enzymatic spray on surfaces immediately after cooking, plus a charcoal bag for the background, will do more.
The 3Volution system
Three alternating scents rotate to prevent your nose going blind to one fragrance. Clever design. Refills cost £8-12 and last about 90 days depending on the setting. Ongoing cost is higher than charcoal bags, which last a year for a one-off £10.
