Amazon Basics portable blackout shade - suction cups, no drilling
This is a sheet of blackout fabric that sticks to the window glass with suction cups. It's 50 inches wide and 78 inches long, costs about $23, and averages 4.4 stars from around 13,700 reviews. The version listed here has a moon and stars print.
How it works
The suction cups are attached to the fabric, and you press them onto smooth glass. Velcro tabs let you fold it down to fit a smaller window. There's no rod, no brackets and no screws, so you won't lose a security deposit over it. It comes with a travel bag.
Because it sits right on the glass, there's no gap at the top like you get with a curtain on a rod. How dark the room gets depends on how closely you fit it to the pane. Wherever the fabric doesn't reach the frame, light comes through.
The trade-offs
Suction cups only stick to smooth glass. Textured glass, window film or a cold, damp window in winter can make them let go, and you'll find it on the floor one morning. It also isn't something you open and close every day. You put it up and leave it, or take it down completely.
It's 100% polyester and machine washable in cold water. Line dry it. Amazon also lists insulation and noise reduction, but don't expect much of either from one layer of fabric on the glass.
Who it's for
- Renters who aren't allowed to drill
- Hotel rooms, vacation rentals and the spare room at the grandparents' house
- Nurseries, especially for daytime naps
- Shift workers who need a quick fix before buying anything permanent (our blackout blinds for shift workers guide covers the longer-term setup)
Who should skip it
If you want to open the window covering every morning, buy curtains or a shade. The NICETOWN 100% blackout lined curtains get closer to full dark on a normal rod. The ChrisDowa cordless roller shade pulls up and down but needs screws. Our light blocking blinds for the bedroom guide compares the options, and best blackout curtains has the full shortlist.
