Cool Gel reversible memory foam pillow - gel on one side, plush foam on the other
The Cool Gel pillow is a standard-size memory foam pillow you can flip. One side has a cooling gel layer. The other is plain contouring memory foam. It costs about $62 and has 4.3 stars from about 9,300 Amazon reviews.
How it's built
The foam is open-cell memory foam, which lets air move through it better than the dense foam in cheaper pillows. The feel is medium-firm. The listing pitches it at side sleepers, with enough height to fill the gap between your head and the mattress, and it works for back sleeping too.
The knit cover comes off for washing. It's standard size, so it fits normal pillowcases.
What the gel does (and doesn't)
The gel side feels cool when you lie down because it pulls heat from your skin. Once it warms to your temperature, that feeling fades. After that, how cool the pillow stays depends on airflow, which is where the open-cell foam helps. Our cooling pillow guide explains this in more detail and ranks this pillow as the best gel memory foam option.
Who it's for
- Side and back sleepers who like the solid, supportive feel of memory foam
- People who want a cooler surface at bedtime without switching to shredded foam or buckwheat
- Anyone who wants to try a cooling pillow without spending $100+
Who should skip it
Very hot sleepers. Solid foam still holds more heat than shredded foam or buckwheat, and gel only helps early in the night. Stomach sleepers should also look elsewhere, since medium-firm foam with side-sleeper height is too tall for them.
Alternatives
The Coop Home Goods Original Adjustable Pillow breathes better and lets you change the height. The Vaverto cooling pillow is a firmer gel foam option for about $35. If you're comparing materials, start with our memory foam vs down vs buckwheat guide.
