Around 20% of people in the UK have hay fever, and dust mite allergy is one of the most common triggers of year-round allergic rhinitis. An air purifier won't cure either, but a good one — running continuously in the rooms where you spend the most time — meaningfully reduces the airborne particle load your immune system has to deal with.

The caveat worth stating upfront: no air purifier removes all allergens. Dust mites and their debris settle on surfaces, mattresses and soft furnishings as well as floating in the air. A purifier tackles the airborne fraction, not the settled fraction. For dust mite allergy in particular, allergen-proof mattress covers and regular washing of bedding at 60°C matter as much as any purifier.

With that said, here are the picks.

The Best Air Purifiers for Allergy Sufferers

1. Winix Zero S — Best Overall for Allergies

Buy on Amazon UK

The Winix Zero S uses an H13 True HEPA filter rated at 99.999% particle removal down to 0.1 microns. The standard True HEPA specification is 99.97% at 0.3 microns — the Winix exceeds both thresholds. For allergy sufferers, that additional filtration efficiency at smaller particle sizes matters: the most allergenic pollen fragments and dust mite allergen particles cluster around 0.1-0.3 microns.

CADR is 410 m³/h and room coverage is 100m², which means rapid air cycling in any domestic room. The auto mode uses a sensor to detect elevated particle concentrations and respond accordingly — useful during hay fever season when pollen levels indoors spike after windows have been opened.

PlasmaWave generates hydroxyl radicals that neutralise airborne pathogens and VOCs. This can be switched off if you prefer a purely mechanical filtration approach.

Specs

  • CADR: 410 m³/h
  • Coverage: 100m²
  • Filter: H13 True HEPA + activated carbon + PlasmaWave (switchable)
  • Approx. price: ~£150

2. Philips Series 3000i AC3033 — Best for Severe Allergies

Buy on Amazon UK

The Philips 3000i carries ECARF (European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation) certification, which is an independently verified quality mark for allergy products. Unlike marketing claims from the manufacturer, ECARF certification involves independent testing of the product's effectiveness for allergy sufferers.

Coverage is 104m² and the filtration system uses a NanoProtect HEPA filter rated at 99.97% particle removal. The notable advantage of this unit over the others is the filter lifespan: Philips quotes 36 months before replacement, versus six to twelve months for most competitors. That significantly reduces running costs — the filter is expensive when you do eventually replace it, but you're only doing so every three years.

The Philips Air+ app shows real-time PM2.5 and allergen level data and logs historical readings. For someone managing a diagnosed allergy, knowing what the air quality is doing over time is genuinely useful.

Specs

  • Coverage: 104m²
  • Filter: NanoProtect HEPA + activated carbon (36-month filter life)
  • ECARF certified
  • Smart: Philips Air+ app, 4 fan speeds, sleep mode
  • Approx. price: ~£200

3. Levoit Core 400S — Best Smart Pick for Allergies

Buy on Amazon UK

The Core 400S covers 166m² and includes a laser PM2.5 sensor that drives its auto mode. During hay fever season, pollen counts indoors rise and fall — windows being opened, people coming in from outside, curtains being disturbed — and having a purifier that reacts automatically to those changes rather than running at a fixed speed is more effective than manual operation.

The H13 HEPA filter captures 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 microns, including pollen and dust mite allergen. The activated carbon section handles VOCs and odours, which isn't an allergy concern but useful alongside the HEPA performance.

Specs

  • CADR: 400 m³/h
  • Coverage: 166m²
  • Smart: Wi-Fi, Alexa, laser PM2.5 sensor, auto mode
  • Approx. price: ~£160

4. Blueair Blue Max 3250i — Best for Night-Time Allergy Relief

Buy on Amazon UK

If your allergies are worst in the morning — blocked nose, itchy eyes on waking — your bedroom air is the problem. The Blueair's 18dB sleep mode means you can run it through the night without disturbing your sleep, while the HEPASilent filtration keeps dander, dust mite debris and pollen levels low throughout.

HEPASilent removes 99.97% of particles down to 0.1 microns. Coverage is 48m², appropriate for any bedroom. The all-off display mode eliminates LED glare.

Specs

  • Coverage: 48m²
  • Noise: 18dB (sleep mode)
  • Filter: HEPASilent + activated carbon
  • Approx. price: ~£169

What Matters for Allergy Purifiers

Filter grade. H13 True HEPA is the minimum for serious allergy management. "HEPA-type" or ungraded "HEPA" filters have no standard specification and may underperform significantly. Check the listing specifically says True HEPA or states an H-grade (H11, H12, H13).

CADR relative to room size. For allergy sufferers, more air changes per hour is better. A purifier rated for 100m² in a 20m² bedroom achieves roughly 5 air changes per hour at medium speed — which is the figure generally recommended for allergy control. Don't buy a unit that's only just adequate for your room size.

Pollen season placement. During summer, the bedroom is the highest priority room. Pollen levels peak outdoors in the morning and evening, and some enters the home every time a door or window opens. Running a purifier in the bedroom overnight reduces the cumulative exposure during the hours when you're most stationary.

What a purifier won't do. It won't remove allergens from mattresses, carpets or soft furnishings. If dust mite allergy is the primary issue, allergen-proof covers for your mattress and pillows make as much difference as a purifier. Washing bedding at 60°C once a week kills dust mites regardless of temperature.
